The brief

This campaign celebrates Kangol’s deep-rooted legacy within the African American community during the 1970s, a transformative decade marked by cultural expression, self-empowerment, and artistic revolution. At its heart is a simple idea: a Kangol was never just a hat; it was a crown.

Shot in Toronto with Steven Zaïre, CROWNED connects the bold, unapologetic style of the Blaxploitation era to the people still writing their own story today.

The campaign traces Kangol’s influence across film, music, and street style, from the smooth-talking heroes of Blaxploitation classics to the everyday trendsetters of Harlem, Los Angeles, and beyond. A manifesto film and signature photoshoot anchor the story, with an archive series, behind-the-scenes content, and social edits carrying it forward.

Through #WearYourCrown, the campaign invites the community to share photos of the first person in their family to wear a Kangol, turning the brand’s history into a shared one. The result treats the hat as a symbol of identity, pride, and resistance, not just an accessory.

Below are the campaign strategy and assets behind CROWNED, showing how Kangol’s 1970s legacy becomes a living campaign and how that story moves across every channel to turn an audience into a community.
